Hi,
We will soon be meeting our birth nephew. What is the best way to introduce him? Hi.. I'd like you to meet my birth nephew John Doe? It is a small town and am sure people will remember. He was given up at birth and just made contact. We are ALL excited about it. Help!
Thank you...

I would ask your nephew what he would like to be referred as. I'm not a big fan of using the "birth" prefix, but he may not feel comfortable being introduced as your nephew. OTOH, he might be perfectly OK with it. Can you ask him how he would like to be introduced?
This was something I asked my son during our first phone call. I have always referred to him as my son when speaking about him to others, but I did not know if he would feel comfortable with that if I were to introduce him in person that way. He said he was fine with it, but if he wasn't, I would have followed his lead.

My siblings, as well as my aunts and uncles, have always introduced my son (whom I relinquished in 1972 and reunited with in 1990) as their nephew. We don't use the word "birth" as a qualifier for any of our family members. We also don't use the terms "step-siblings" or "half siblings."
Thanks so much. I am going to ask him how he wants to be introduce. I have spoken with him and asked him if it is okay to call him my nephew. He is okay with it. We are all so happy to have him in our lives. He IS my nephew and I have ALWAYS wanted to meet him. Thanks so much for your advice.
