My fianc and I are starting the adoption process and the research is very overwhelming. We live in PA and have received info from adopt help and adoption from the heart so far. Does anyone have any advice on how to chose the correct agency?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Clare
There are several things to keep in mind when choosing an agency. Be wary of agencies that ask for a large amount up front or offer "fast and easy" adoptions. Check with the better business bureau in your area for any lawsuits against the agency. Get referrals from people who have used the agency before (this is a great place to get that feedback). Check into how they treat the expectant mother, do they offer pre and post placement counseling. Check how many placements they make a year. Be careful, some agencies charge an exorbitant amount.
Are you interested in domestic or international adoption? I know of a few good books for domestic.

Thanks for the information. We are looking at domestic adoption. Suggestions on books would be great-this is very overwhelming!
I would recommend successful adoption: a guide for Christian families (no matter what your beliefs are it is like a huge how to manual) by gillespie and secrets to your successful domestic adoption. They really helped me out a lot. If you are looking for a semi open adoption out or an open an adoption i recommend the open adoption experience. Hope this helps!
I recommend looking at an agency's website from the perspective of an expectant parent. Does the agency attempt to recruit pregnant women by dangling excessive expenses? Does the agency encourage moving into agency owned housing sometimes across state lines? Do they encourage early matching?
Each of these things can be coercive to people exploring placement of their children and can also drive up your costs exponentially. Don't forget that adoption is big business and treat an agreement you make with an agency like you would any business deal; read everything and ask your attorney to double check the terms you are agreeing to.
