I posted and reposted this on facebook -- hopefully her writing will cause some greater level of understanding of the difficulties of parenting children with special needs, particularly mental illness.
I saw that article too.... it was fabulous. I hope that it brings awareness to this important issue.

I saw the article a few hours ago over on Facebook. I think it's an excellent one, coming from a mom whose teenage son is mentally ill.
We need more access to the mental-health system in our country...for everybody. Stop relying on the penal system to warehouse schizophrenics and bipolars -- reopen the state hospitals that were shut down in the late 1960's when the government tried to give communities the incentive to treat patients in their own locales. The philosophy was a good idea, but it's never worked out the way it was supposed to. Instead of setting up community residential centers for chronically mentally ill patients, most places just let them rot in the streets, hence the homeless population.
I really don't know what the answer is, but I think it would be a good idea to open up dialogue in our country and bring these issues into the open.
I saw this earlier and posted to facebook as well. Might give some of my friends and family a little better picture of what we go through every day. And the fears we have for our STBAS' future.
Seriously good article. Not many people understand what the parents of mentally ill children go through. Sometimes you can do everything right and it still doesn't turn out well. And when you ask for help, there isn't any.
