We have been licensed a few years, for ages 0-18. We have had calls for a baby a few weeks old all the way to 16 or 17 year olds. I would say the most calls we've gotten have been for kids 7 or younger. However, the calls we get tend to be about 6 months apart and come in groups. So we may get three calls, then nothing.
In all, I would say that it has to do with:
1. your agency/dcfs office
2. where you live - the need in your area, number of foster homes, relative closeness to area kid is from (can be a good/bad/unimportant thing)
3. How well the workers know you
4. whether all the planets line up to make a great connect the dots picture
The first two placements we had were ones our agency had trouble finding places for. They were actually kids being moved from other foster homes, but were teen boys. After that the workers knew us better ... and we knew ourselves better. Actually, we thought that perhaps we were done. It had taken a lot out of us.
It took over 6 months before we even considered saying yes to one of the calls. It was only after realizing that, due to RU coming up and related visits, I would be spending 25+ hours away from home each week. We said No. What this did do was show me that perhaps we were ready to consider another kid/s.
I think there is no "this is how it is" even if we are all in the same state. I know, not exactly what you wanted to hear. It wasn't what I wanted to hear either.
