Hi,
I am single, 37 and live in Virginia. I am looking to adopt a child under 5 years old. Prefer a girl, but it doesn't really matter.
I don't know whether I should do a domestic or international adoption.
I would like to adopt from China or a Native American, but I know it's near impossible to adopt a Native American child if you're not on the rez. I am part Native, but I don't know my culture, though I live in an area where the child would have exposure to their culture and learning their language.
I would love to adopt from China. It looks like I meet all of their qualifications, except one. My net worth is not $100k.
I make enough from my job and investments to more than exceed their annual expectations.
My family is very supportive, my father is a doctor and my mother a homemaker. My father has offered to add my name to investments to try to meet the net worth. Things I would inherit eventually anyway.
My job provides assistance with adoption, but I haven't checked into what that entails just yet.
I don't mind adopting a child with correctable health issues, but I can't take a child with severe disabilities. Okay I admit it I am afraid of having a child that would abuse the family pets or burn the house down.
Do insurance companies cover an adopted child with health issues?
I'm not in a hurry to get a child. I am at this point willing to be patient for the right child to come along. Be patient in my paperwork, etc.
I'm not looking for a newborn, but from the waiting times I am hearing it sounds like that is what I should aim for and hope I get the child before it's school age..
I am looking to adopt because I am single and would like to enjoy parenthood while I'm still young enough to be a team mom, dance mom, or just plain awesome mom. I just don't see myself meeting someone and having a family and that hope fades every year.
I would be grateful for any advice. I have lots of love and time with supportive friends and a family that will spoil them.
Thanks,
Amy
