Hello! First post, need some advice please : )
I'm 7 1/2 months along and have been in contact with the adoptive couple since month 4 (private adoption, out of state)
I always made it clear I needed assistance when I start having problems working and now it seems I'm getting the run around. We met 2 weeks ago for the first time and everything was great. I'm starting to think they might have second thoughts about adopting, could that be?? My bills are not much at all and they know that, all I'd like them to pay is my rent, electric and car insurance, nothing else. I'm a housekeeper by trade and it's hard work and I've had some problems with back. carpal tunnel, etc. I lost my foodstamps last month and never an offer to help me out. This is the first time I emailed and said, ok, i think i need assistance now. They come back and say that they still have a few things to hash out with a new attorney and if I could wait a couple more weeks. I'm starting to doubt them now, if i wanted someone to just pay my bills I would have done that with an agency when I was 3 months pregnant and on. They say all assistance has to be done through the attorney that's why they can't do it. They have an attorney in their state, can't he be the intermediate? Can't we have a paper trail until the attorney here gets finalized? it just seems fishy, please help!
I've been 100% sure about this couple from the start, now I'm having my doubts.
Maybe you should think about going through an adoption agency, rather than lawyers. It sounds to me like the potential adoptive parents have been getting advice from others not to pay any "birth mother expenses." Personally, I don't believe in PAPs paying these expenses because it makes it too easy for a new mother to feel obligated to place her baby for adoption once he or she is born. Many women change their mind during and after the childbirth process, and it's just too easy for them to feel guilty about even thinking of raising their baby if they've received financial assistance from the PAPs.
Does your state offer short-term disability? You may want to check and see if you're eligible for this type of help. By the way, I don't know what's up with the EBT program (foodstamps) lately, but a good friend of mine who has worked her entire life and has always paid her taxes just got turned down last week, even though she lost her job, has no money at all, and is sleeping on a friend's living-room floor. She doesn't have any children, though, so that may have something to do with it.
The other thing you should look into is the WIC program, although I'm not sure what the government's current sequestration means as far as that program is concerned.
