Hi there,
Does anyone have any input on adopting infants with drug exposure? And what they are like in adolescents and adulthood? It seems like there are limited research studies in this area. I know there is a higher chance of frontal lobe damage where intuition and judgment are located, but I was wondering how severe this is, and if brain plasticity can help when children are placed in a nurturing environment?
Although nothing is set in stone yet, I am very interested in adopting a baby with prenatal drug exposure. when I told my mom this, she was very worried. She was a teacher for 30 years in a low socio-economic area and saw a lot of these kids. And she has heard horror stories of what happens when these kids reach adolescents. I would love some input on this if anyone has experience. I know these babies won't be perfect. I am ready to deal with the motor and some sensory differences that will likely be involved. I understand they may need PT, OT, or ST for developmental needs. I am okay with this. I just am not ready to adopt someone that may not have a conscience at all, or someone with ongoing severe, aggressive behaviors. If placed as an infant in a nurturing environment do you know how likely this would be? I so want to make a difference in the life of one of these babies before having my own babies. I would love to be reassured or have input from other moms out there that have experiences. Any good stories of these kids as teenagers, or are they all bad?
Any input is greatly appreciated. Adoption has always been close to my heart and my husband and I look forward to expanding our family through foster-adoption if possible. Thanks so much for any advice you can give us!
