This is kind of a cross post from the foster/adopt board. We were finally chosen for placement of two little boys but they live in San Bernadino County and and we are in Northern CA, foothills. It is at least a 7 or 8 hour drive for us and these boys are still having some visitations. We can't be driving across the state every few weeks for visits so our plan is to tell the placement worker that we can travel initially for disclosure and placement and then we will be willing to drive down every other month and have birth family come up here on the opposite month IF they can get visits down to once a month, other wise we will have to pass.
I know it is asking a lot from the placement worker and she may not be able to work with us but that is the most we can do. So we will see what happens....
Since it's a pre-adoptive match oftentimes they work on reducing/stopping visits once an adoptive home is found. I'm sure they don't expect you, or the children, to make that trek often. That just doesn't make sense. Good luck! Check back and let us know what they say.

Our SW let the boys placement worker know what we were willing to do as far as travel and then never heard back. I called to check on things a week later and our SW said she assumes we were not picked :grr:
It's so frustrating! Haven't heard a word from our SW sense then and that was three weeks or more ago!!!
I am actually wondering if maybe this is not what we are supposed to be doing. Maybe we should switch back to straight foster care and not plan on adopting. I know there is a huge need for that in our county.....
SB County from our experience is VERY slow about anything and everything. :) The adoption unit moves at its own slow pace. Weeks between contact with them. They are horrible about returning phone calls and emails BUT I would not change a minute of the frustration because in the end we have our beautiful daughter forever. We joke (sort of) that we will never look at a child in that county again.
