I honestly don't know much about tablets, I prefer actual computers. lol
Anyway, the age of the child is a factor for which tablet is good. I have a Jazz, and I'm happy enough with it. I don't use it much, but it was under $100, so I don't feel like I overspent. I do not like how the Internet works on it, but it is okay for the games, and for reading.
My friend got her 6 year old grandchild a Nabi, and the kid absolutely loves it. A year later, and she still plays with it often.

The Windows Surface is a good alternative, although I don't know if I'd call it inexpensive.
They start at $350.00 and can be a bit more depending on the options. The keyboard snaps on and you can get one that has raised keys or flat keys. Think the keyboard starts at $130. So for under $500, you can have a nice tablet.
What I also like about Surface, is that it uses Windows 8 and that is a very easy program to use. Plus, it contains some apps that teachers can use to help their students.
One app allows for the student to basically download a teacher's notes from the smart board directly to the tablet itself.
So if you are getting it for school purposes, it's great! If it's more for general use, I'd check out the Samsung ones that are more in the $200 range I think.
