My DH and I are almost licensed to become foster/adoptive parents, yay!!! My whole family knows this, and are very excited and supportive. Last night I get a call from my uncles wife, my aunt by marriage. It seems her cousin is pregnant, and does not want this baby. She was told about us and wants us to adopt her baby. As much as we would love to, we cannot afford a private adoption. Is there another way to do an adoption other than thru an agency and it costing $20,000? Does anyone have any ideas?? Thank you so much for any help.
Yes. If it is possible in your state, you do an attorney assisted adoption. I am in the process of completing one right now, and the total will come out to about $4,000. I, too, am adopting a friend's child. The good thing about this is that you do not have to spend almost anything before the child is born and the parents have signed the parental termination. You do have to put a retainer on the attorney, but you get a refund if the adoption is disrupted.
I was advised here to get a "AAAA" attorney, and I found 3 in my area. The one I have now is awesome, and I couldn't be happier. You really need an attorney who knows their stuff with attorney-assisted adoption.
I was asked to adopt the child at a time when I had just spend a lot of money fixing a house problem, so agency was out and I was about to put adoption on the back-burner.
Check a "Quad A" attorney in your area. Good luck to you and feel free to PM with questions.
