I'm currently fostering to adopt (well, licensed but no current placement after having one RU quickly). I've recently applied for a job which, if I got it, would mean I would not be able to foster or adopt from foster care; the job is too closely connected to the foster care system for me to be allowed to based on my state's regulations. I applied on Friday, so they won't even look at it until at least Monday, and applications don't close for a few more weeks, so this is way to early to start thinking about "what ifs," but I am anyway. I know I'm not ready to be done, so if I did get the job I would likely start looking into doing another private agency adoption. I have a lot of qualms about this, though. My son's adoption went great (despite some excruciating bumps along the way), and I felt at the time that the agency was totally ethical and did everything right. Since then I have learned some things that make me question that, and I worry that I ended up using an agency that was not as ethical as I thought. So I worry about not "getting it right" a second time. I have learned some things that might help me, but I still worry.
I would probably only look at special needs adoption the second time around, for a variety of reasons, and would only be interested in adopting a fully or partially AA child, because my son is AA. Because I like to really think things through, I want to start considering potential options now, even if it never pans out to anything. I also would need a reasonably priced (ha-ha, right?) agency, at least as much so as possible; this is both because I can't afford huge fees and also because I feel like there is more incentive for unethical behavior if the fees are super high.
So, does anyone have any agency recommendations that you could PM me? Or any BTDT advice on what worked for you?
