I adopted my son as an older child adoption 5 years ago. Now I'm looking to adopt again, preferably an older who is legally free (or headed that way). I'm open to a variety of special needs, and very open to kids who are considered difficult to place.
I contacted my county to ask about renewing our certification but after getting the run around for a month, I was finally told that they are only certifying: a) families who will do traditional foster care and b) families who have a child identified.
Traditional Foster care is not right for my family at this time, and I'm not sure how I would identify a legally free child without being able to make inquiries (by having a current home study).
So I guess they're saying "go through a private agency"? I assume going through an agency means going through training again (which I was really hoping to avoid) and more $. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but annoying.
Does that sound right or am I getting blown off? TBH in the past I've gotten on a few of the social worker's bad side by advocating for some kids I mentor, but I don't think I've p***'d off anyone with any real power. I do know some of the highest level people in the department and am considering asking them if this sounds right, but that would certainly earn me more enemies.
This does sound a bit odd. I can't imagine that the country, or any agency, would ever have enough adoptive homes.
I wouldn't think you would need to retake classes, or redo anything, as long as you are current with all your paperwork and have copies of it an agency should work with you and assist in finding your next child. Talk to a couple of agencies in your area and see what they have to say about changing from the county to them.
Good luck, if you are feeling like it is time for another child I know that he or she is out there and you need to do what is best for you family.

Thanks for the reply. I did talk to some agencies, both public and private, and they would all make us start from scratch with new training since it's been several years since we took it.
I guess what she was saying is that they don't have the resources to invest in people who may not be serious about adoption or misguided people who think they will be able to adopt a healthy newborn without doing foster care. I sent a nice follow-up email to explain that we are clearly not those people and should be able to be an exception to the "policy" (if it does in fact exist). My goals are to: a) make sure I understand what she told me over the phone, and b) get it in writing so I can potentially escalate my request.
Here if you your license isn't current you basically have to start from scratch...new home study, new training, new background check, etc.
No, it doesn't sound odd for our area. Our county is not licensing families who want to adopt without doing traditional foster care.
They refer families who want to adopt (i.e.- get a low legal risk placement) to the private agencies.
And also, if it's been more than 2 years since you were last licensed, you would need to start over from scratch in our area, even if you stayed with the county.

Thanks jmd. It does make me feel a little bit better to hear that this may be a valid "policy". I was hoping not to have to go back through training but if your rules are the same as mine I guess I'll have to do that regardless. Well I guess I'll wait and see how they respond to my latest request.

This is true for us too. We had to redo everything.
