Hello! This is my first post to a forum, so bare with me please!
I was hoping someone could answer my questions as to what kinds of things would exclude my husband and I from becoming adoptive parents. In particular, 15 years ago (when hubby was 19) he had a son and signed away parental rights. :(
My husband and I have been married for ten years. We both have stable income, and neither has any arrests or criminal backgrounds. Adoption is what I always imagined I would do when it came time to start our family, but I'm not sure we would be approved because of hubby's previous mistakes (for lack of a better word).
Thanks all for your responses!

The answer really depends on the circumstances. If your husband placed a child for adoption or signed over his rights so that a stepparent could adopt, that is his right and not something that would get in the way of adopting. There are other birthparents on here who have later gone on to adopt. If, however, his child was in foster care and he was substantiated for abuse or neglect of a child, then voluntarily signed over his rights to avoid having them terminated involuntarily, the abuse or neglect finding would get in the way of adopting. That would be true no matter how long ago it happened. From the sounds of your post, I am guessing it is the first scenario rather than the second, so it should not be a problem.
