So my 13 year old nephew needs a new place to go. His mother (my sister) is ready to turn him over to the the state, the father is not in the picture at all, not even on the birth certificate.
I married a Canadian 7 years ago and became a dual citizen 18 months ago. On the surface, this seems like a cut and dry international adoption, but I'm wondering if it makes any sense for me to adopt him in the US, then work on the immigration to Canada separately.
As an alternative, I wonder if I can just petition for guardianship to get him up here sooner, though it seems like Canada might not approve of that at the border.
I've reached out to adoption agencies in Canada and the US, but wondering if anyone here has ideas of how to make the transition as soon as possible, rather than leave him where he's at for another year or more during the process.
Thanks for any input you may have!
