Hello Everyone, I'm about to go and pick-up my 5 and a half year old son in Bulgaria. I've applied for adoption leave from my employer. They had never envisaged adoption leave in their rules and regulations. I need to explain to them why time off after the child arrives is crucial to build a bond and develop attachment. Apparently, they need convincing (!). Would suitable articles on the matter be available ? I would be most most grateful for any help. Cheers for now. Marie B.

As a Human Resource Manager I know first hand that the Family and Medical Leave Act provides protected time for the adoption of and bonding with an adopted child. Generally, if you have been with a company for at least 1 year (and 1080 hours), you are eligible. The business must grant this leave for you of up to 12 weeks, and your job is protected upon your return in most circumstances.
Basically, it's a federal law that you get the 12 weeks max of leave (unpaid or paid at the company's choosing).:D
