In search of birthmother for son born August 23, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. at St. Vincent's Infant Hospital and Orphanage, located at 721 N. La Salle Street, Chicago. Child weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces (5 ounces?). Records are now kept by Catholic Charities. Child's name was "John Bowe" at orphanage, not sure if this was fictitious name or actual given name. Mother's name on official adoption decree says Kathryn Bowe. She would have been 18 years old at the time (born abt. 1920-1922). Birthmother was of Irish descent and attending high school. Her family was well educated and she may have gone on to college.
Birthfather was Italian, also 18 years old and in high school. Family stories passed along by adoptive parents say that "John Bowe" was kept by his grandmother for 8 months before being put up for adoption. He was adopted at 14 months old by the John and Hazel Murphy family of Chicago. Adoption decree is dated Nov. 25, 1940. The judge signing the decree was Edmund K. Jared (?), Case #96730. Attorney representing John and Hazel Murphy was Victor E. Rehn, 38 S. Dearborn Street., Chicago.
