Hi:
When my daughter was in 3rd grade she had a teacher that was a very recent graduate from college. This teacher did a special project on Learning Styles while she was in college. Some of the learning style testing that she did with our children was helpful. It was too lengthy for me personally to go through the test to learn my own learning style and what busy mom has the time! LOL. So I read books on the topic and thought it would really be a big help if my children struggled in school.
What I read was that there are four combinations of types of learning styles. The reason it is helpful to know if your child leans toward a certain learning combination is that it could help you to aid them in doing their homework or help them have the information presented to them in a manner that corresponds more directly with the way they are wired. Rather than to expect our children to learn through a manner that would be more difficult for them.
Here are the four combinations that are mentioned in Cynthia U. Tobias' Book on Learning styles entitled "The Way They Learn How to Discover and Teach to Your Child's Strengths"
(By reading the whole book it is easier to grasps how this works)
Here are the Four Combinations
Concrete Sequential: Hardworking, conventional, accurate, stable, dependable, consistent, factual, organized
Abstract Random: Sensitive, compassionate, perceptive imaginative, idealistic, sentimental, spontaneous, flexible.
Abstract Sequential: Analytic, objective, knowledgeable, thorogh, structured, logical, deliberate, systematic
Contract Random: Quick, intuitive, curious, realistic, creative, innovative, instinctive, adventurous
I liked how studying the four combinations slowed me down to really think through who my child is.
Is this information of help to any of you?
In the book it also explains how to get along with each of the combinations. Would anyone like me to post the information on how to get along with each type of learner?
