My wife and I are in the process of trying to adopt here in Michigan through the FIA. The children we found are 3 and 4 years in age in West Virginia. We are AA as are the two kids.
Due to a serious illness I encountered (but now under control after one year) I had to file chapter 13 bankruptcy. I now earn 60,000+ a year now that I'm back to work, but am concerned that the banckruptcy will hurt. Does anyone know?
Also how long does it take here in Michigan going through FIA and doing an interstate adoption?
Any input would be appreciated
Thanks
Most of the times they do not check for bankrupcy in home study. what they look at is theamount of income in rato to the amount spent each month to insure there is enough to care for the children

Hello, I am new to this, I was heartened to read Abigail's response. My partner and I are hoping to adopt a bi-racial baby. He is black and I am white, female, english. I was very nervous reading about financial information which will be required for the homestudy. My partners professional life took a plunge after September 11, it's still very, very rocky. I earn very well, but we are both involved in payment plans with the IRS, due to paying taxes late. We definitely have enough money to provide for a child, but our finances are not very organized looking. Does anyone know if this will give us problems? In every other way, I really believe we will qualify well. I am very nervous. Thanks Kim
