Biography

Also known as Daniel Wyn o Ddyfed

Welsh poet and minister

Davies was born in Pentregalar, Pembrokeshire, South Wales. His father was killed in an accident when he was young, and his mother and his two brothers all died soon afterwards, leaving him to be raised by his aunt.

He studied for the ministry and was ordained in 1916, and spent his entire career, until retirement in 1958, at Capel Als, Llanelli. He became one of the leaders of the Welsh Independent church (Congregationalists), but was also a fine poet, winning a number of major competitions at eisteddfodau, including the most prestigious of all, the Chair, at the National Eisteddfod, in 1932. He published a collection of his poems, Cywyddau a Chaniadau Eraill, in 1968. [Last updated: 12 SEP 2004]
