Biography

Gingrich never knew his birth father. His mother married Robert Gingrich, and he was adopted by his step-father.

After university (Emory and Tulane) he became a college professor, and then entered politics, running for the US Congress in 1974 and being first elected in 1978. He was House Republican whip from 1989 to 1994 and was elected speaker of the House of Representatives in 1995 and again in 1997.

He has written or co-authored four books.
