American politician

Bayard and his siblings were adopted by their uncle, John Bubenheim Bayard, when their father died. From 1797 to 1803 he was a member of the US House of Representatives from Delaware, from 1804 to 1813 he was US senator from Delaware. He was a member of the Bayard-Clayton political dynasty of Delaware, which is still active in the 20th century, including two of his sons and two grandsons, all US senators from Delaware.
