Biography

Hobsbawm's British and German-Jewish parents died when he was 12 and 14 years old, in central Europe, and he was then raised by relatives. He came to England after Hitler came to power, and was educated at Cambridge.

He has been a committed communist since his early teens, which hindered his academic career, but he is now recognized as one of the world's foremost historians.
