Edward Austen Knight and Adoption
Biography
1768-1852
Knight was the brother of Jane Austen, the novelist. In the early 1780s he was adopted by Thomas and Catherine Knight, Austen family cousins, who were wealthy but childless. He went on the Grand Tour of Europe in 1786-88, went into business, and eventually inherited their estate at Godmersham, Kent. His grandson edited the first edition of Jane's letters.
