We have adopted four children from the State agency. One of our adoptions took over three years to finalize. It was such an emotional roller coaster, wondering if someone was coming to take my child away from one day to the next, that we just can't go through the State again. We want to adopt again and have started investigating private agencies. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good, trustworthy agency that does not charge an arm and a leg. We are hoping to adopt any race or ethnicity, boy or girl. Any input or help would be greatly appreciated.
They are not inexpensive. We recently (w/in the last two weeks) inquired and their fee was about $18,000. I've heard it can vary by area however I can't see it varying by enough to make it "reasonable"... but that's a very relative term.

Lifeline Adoption Agency is located in Birmingham, AL. It's a Christian Agency and I really can't tell you what their fees are. To say it is a sliding scale I don't think is necessarily true. I do think they take into consideration your family income is. They do a large number of AA and Bi-racial placements. They are affiliated with Sav-A-Life (a pro-life organization) and they also have a home they operate for pregnant mothers. I think the cost also depends on the situation i.e. if they had to house/care for the BM as well as any fees associated with the legalities if the BF is unknown. Our adoption almost two years ago was around 7,000. I'm also aware of adoptions they've done for more as well as much less. They're a ministry who cares and focuses on placement as opposed to the financials. Their website is lifelineadoptions.org. You can also locate them by keying into any search engine: Lifeline Childrens Services. They don't do single parent adoptions and they do require a statement of faith and prolife. Don't, however, pay attention to the babies they show on their website. That's the only thing I don't like about the agency is that they don't update it frequently and they don't put many of their available infants on the web. I know they do a number of placements out of state because my son's foster mother has cared for numerous children and most of her babies haven't really been placed within the state of Alabama nor locally. They were wonderful to work with and if you have a homestudy, they will accept one done by a licensed sw. Many blessings in your quest to adopt.
In this months Adoptive Families Magazine 'Waiting Children' there are 7 year old Twin brothers with a 6 year old very adorable Sister!

Biracial and AA adoptions- resonable fees.

Adoption Connections

Same - good reputation
Marks of Grace
South Carolina
Very low cost, must be Christian.
My feeling is to STAY AWAY from facilitators. Why? You have to pay a lot up front usually, and there are no guarantees you'll be matched.
PACT: An Adoption Allience is the best agency i know that does transracial adoptions.
They are located in CA.
Their website is http://www.pactadopt.org/

I contacted PACT within the past week via email. The response I received is they are having financial trouble and are not taking on any new clients. They hope to have the situation remedied by October and at that point may be taking new clients. They're still providing counseling and education services but are not placing children for adoption.
I take every opportunity to recommend our small Utah agency. It is non-sectarian and places only African American and biracial newborns and infants. They are honest, professional and compassionate. We will use them again. Their fee is a flat rate as stated on their website. That does not include finalization. They are in Utah; we are in California, and our daughter was born in a third state.

As I've posted before, look up Christine Welch, in Tampa, Fla. We used here back in Sept. 2001 and she's awesome. She's affordable and very easy to work with.

that we have been working with a small agency in southern Indiana called, CHILDPLACE.
They place several AA and bi-racial babies per year, are honest....and there are only a few requirements:
You must be Christian.
You cannot smoke.
You must be involved with your church.
And finally....and one of the most important measures I think:
You must be willing to accept a full race child if you are willing to adopt bi-racially too. They do not have specific fees for caucasian or Afrian-American or bi-racial. They often have a great need for families who want to adopt transracially.
They have a $100. app fee. They ask for $3,000 up front----WHICH IS TOTALLY REFUNDABLE UP TO ONE YEAR---IN FULL....and the rest of the balance is DUE ONLY WHEN A PLACEMENT IS MADE IN YOUR HOME AND EVERYTHING IS "FREE AND CLEAR". The total placement fee is $10,000. You would finalize in your state if living out of state.
Also, because they are licensed in Indiana and Kentucky......if you are adopting out of state, they require the baby to go into their OWN foster families until everything is free and clear (something I don't like....only because I think it impedes the bonding process.....but Kent has some different laws...)
And....the fee you pay includes the time (however long it takes to publish, etc).....in foster care, I believe the medicals too.......and everything but finalization.
The fact that you lose nothing if you find placement somewhere else, and no full amount of money is required until placement.....is a rare thing indeed.
I have a real problem with agencies that require that money.....or roll it over for the next situation....because then you are stuck with them, should another situation work out.
Sincerely,
Linny
We're about to start our third adoption process. We have 2 a/a boys who are the cat's pajamas. We've used Jeanne Tate in Tampa, FL and feel that everyone (us, birthparents, kids) was treated well. Flat fee, lots of experience. You pick your "adoption cap" and they work with situations within your budget. We live in WA state, so we will have the additional expense of travel. But we feel it is worth it because the laws in FL are very adoption friendly (a very important part of who to pick!)
Live in IL?
We adopted 3 AA children at no cost. It was a process of approximately 2 1/2 years. We choose to foster to adopt a sibbling group. Our daughter and son came to live with us after we completed a foster parenting course. There were family visits and court dates. . . but it was worth it. The birth mother had another child and we brought her home when she was 3 days old. They are beautiful children and we consider ourselves blessed. The agency we used was ECFA (Evangelical Child and Family Agency) in Wheaton, IL. 630-653-6400.
