Hi everyone! Ok, I am going to go out on a limb and pray I don't sound ridiculous! My husband and I are caucasion as are our 2 children. We are adopting a bi-racial baby girl who is actually due in 2 weeks!!! We are THRILLED! As the mommy, I have questions about certain things that are basically just a fear of the unknown. With my son I didn't know how to cut a boys hair. Girls you just let it grow and trim it! But what about a boy??? I figured it out. He actually got his daddy's cut! Little twins! Anyway, I have been getting all sorts of questions from family and friends that have in turn made me want answers to their questions. The big one is...hair. I have no experience with this texture and I am interested in what products I should buy and what I can do to style her hair. Also, to us her being bi-racial is of no concern, but I'm sure others will have questions and comments. I'd like to be well prepared, especially for her sake. I want to be able to answer her questions as well and get more involved with others who are AA and bi-racial. I just don't know a whole lot of people! We live in a diverse community, I just don't know where to start or where to plug-in. Suggestions? Also, I have always grown up playing with dolls of various skin tones. I am hoping to do the same with my daughters (2 including the one we are adopting). I don't want to give one the "black" doll and one the "white" doll. Do you think that just giving them each dolls of all colors is a good idea? I am not exactly sure how to approach this. Anyone had experience with this? I'm sure I'll just end up buying the doll they pick out! LOL!!! Thanks for all your in-put! I look forward to your suggestions!!!!!!

Hi there!
First of all, cautious congratulations to you!
Second, don't worry too much about hair until she has some! LOL Please go out and purchase the book "It's All Good Hair." You can find it online at http://www.bamm.com
Also, please purchase the book in my signature line below.
As for the toys, I used to be weird about only buying dolls with skin tones like Bella's, but now her favorite doll is White. Oh well. She will have a plethora of "babies" to choose from and we shouldn't get too hung up on all that.
There are some great groups you can join that address many issues pertaining to being an interracial family, hair care, transracial adoption, etc. Just PM me!
Blessings!

First of all, congratulations! What an exciting time!
We have a biracial boy, and his hair is straight but sort of coarse. It went through all different stages from birth to 1 year of age, it started kinky and I just used some gel for AA men to keep it that way, then it started to go straight, and now I just use regular conditioner and a little "frizz ease" to keep it from getting out of control during the day. My husband is AA and there are plenty of products in the store you can use. I would wait until you see what kind of hair she has, she may have really kinky hair or straight, just don't worry for many months because it will go through stages.
Good luck to you and your family!
Although I haven't adopted yet (but hope to soon!) I have heard great things about the new line of Pantene products for textured hair. If anyone on here has used it, I would be interested to hear your opinions on it.
And about the dolls, our daughter (who is cauc.) has both white and AA dolls. Plus I purposefully bought her a cauc. barbie with brunette hair because I was so sick of see those blonde white barbies! I come from a transracially family but since my husband and I are cauc. we wanted our kids to feel free to play with any color doll. I'm sure it doesn't make a huge difference to my daughter, a doll is a doll. But my husband says I have to over-analyze everything! It's just my nature.:D

Thanks for your advice. Today is our due date and the waiting is torture! We are watching the phone like it is a bomb! RING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We just cannot wait to see our daughter!
Please say a prayer for our birth mom...that all goes extremely well for her, that she experiences as little pain as possible, that she has continuing support, love, and encouragement, and that she can go back to being a kid.
:)
