You can begin by having her evaluated by a speech and language pathologist. Your local elementary school should have one on site. By law, the therapist is required to evaluate her. From there, the therapist can discuss options. Don't wait until she starts school. Good Luck

I am a special education teacher at a public school in New Jersey. Most hospitals are able to test children for learning difficulties. If that is not available check your local school district for an Early Intervention program and/or testing. Most states require an early intervention program.
no my daughters school does not offer any thing but i wish they did as i think she would benifit from this!!!

You need to call the public school district you live in, the special education department. They can direct you to the appropriate department. It is not an option for them to say they don't have these services. It is a federal law, IDEA, Individuals with disabilities education act.

Has she been to her yearly pediatric check up? You may want to start there. The doctor can evaluate her for any physical conditions that may be slowing her down. He can then refer her to an appropriate specialist for further evaluation and treatment.

Laura did you get your child evaluated? If so, what did they find? You said that your school does not offer early intervention services... Then you should call your state board of education. THey should know what to do. I personally have never heard of a school that does not evaluate...or know of people who can evaluate. The school may not want to do it. Try to go through Easter Seals if you have too. Your child may be too old, but they may be able to get you on the correct path... good luck and keep us posted...

You may want to send your daughter to a neuropsychologist for an evaluation. They can run mental ability tests (IQ etc) on her. You can get a referrel through her pediatrician. She may have ADD (attention deficit disorder) that could be slowing her learning. Good Luck! JK
