I posted this on yahoo, but I also wanted to do it here. My DH and I are adopting through CAII and we are using a private agency to do our homestudy. We started our homestudy on April 15th 2003 and it was finished on Aug 27th 2003. She had to do a homestudy report for the court system in our state because we have to be state approved first. The judge signed it in one day which is very fast he has been signing them in 2 wks. Our social worker is now required to shorten and reformat the state HS to fit the Panama requirments. She has told us she did not plan on the judge signing it so fast she thought it would take a months so she will not have our Panama report done till the first part of October. We were very upset because this is all we have left and we will be ready to submit to Panama. I know HS are hard to do and I know social workers work hard on them, I just want to know if this is what usually happens with HS, they just take along time and that is just how it is, or they usually go faster. We want to adopt more children and I just want us to make good choices with who we work for. I have no complaints at all with her she is great, but the time is a huge factor. Any input would really be great or any input on your experience.
Thank you so much,
TanyaB
That seems like a very long time! We are starting our homestudy on Wednesday and expect to have our three meetings completed in 3 weeks and then another week or two for her to finish the report. Others who have used this homestudy agency for international adoptions have commented on how quick they are so that was one reason we chose this agency (we are in WI). I don't know why yours would take so long. Maybe if you tell her that this is the last thing you need they can hurry up the process.
Good luck!

Tanya,
This seems like a very long time to complete a home study. Ours was completed within about 5 weeks of when we met with the social worker.
Also, when you say that the homestudy is all you have left before you are ready to submit to Panama, I wonder how that can be. You have to have your 171H letter from BCIS before you can submit your dossier and you can't get that letter until your homestudy has been submitted to BCIS and you've had your fingerprints done.
Good luck with your process, but I'd look for a different homestudy agency in the future - one that can complete the HS in far less time.

The agency that we used in Arizona was able to re-format our homestudy in 2 days to meet the Panama Requirements. The home study was complete within 4 weeks and submitted to the court. We received court approval within 2 weeks. During the Agency review they ask that some things be moved and re-formated. This was turned around in 2 days, re-notarized, and re-apostilled.
I would discuss this with your social worker to try to move up the process. Perhaps your agency can help.
Laurie,
I think you may have mentioned who did your HS in Arizona, but I was wondering if you could please let us know. We are also from AZ and going through CAI. We are exploring our options as far as HS social workers or agencies if we choose to change for post-placement reports. We discussed the situation with CAI and they were very nice about it but there is little they could do on there end, so we are waiting and leaving it in Gods hands:)
Any info would greatly be appreciated.

The homestudy agency that we used was Adoption Journeys of Arizona. They have a web site:

The social worker, Lenore, at Adoption Journeys use to work for CAII and is very familiar with their requirements.
She was very quick at getting all of our paperwork done. She also followed up on everything very quickly.
