My wife and I have been together for 3 years. When I met her she had a 3 year old son who is now 6. His birth father lives out of state and has had no contact w/ him in over 3 years. No phone calls, no visits, no child support. My question is, how good are my chances of being able to adopt my step son on grounds of abandonment? We live in Tennessee. His birth father says he will never consent to the adoption. Thank you for your help.

This question is particular to Tennessee law, and you need to ask an attorney there, or research the law yourself. If it were in my state, Hawaii, you would likely be able to complete an adoption under these circumstances, but every state has its own laws.
