I need Legal Consulation or Advice. I have a son who is six years old who has never met his biological father (will call him Jerry). The Court allowed Jerry supervised visitation only, due to Jerry's physical abusive behavior and ordered him to pay child support. Jerry has not made one visit with my son over the six years and I have yet to see a consistance in child support payments. I have remarried and have been with my current husband (will call him Rocky) for four years now. My son does not know that the only father he has ever known is not his real dad.
I want to relenquish Jerry's parental rights and have Rocky adopt him. Jerry has agreed to this as well. What is my next step? Do you have to obtain a lawyer to do this or is their just some forms to fill out and have filed?
I had the same situation with my daughter years ago, 17 to be exact. We had to obtain a lawyer, and file a petition to adopt. Since I was not sure where the father was, I had to advertise in newspapers where I thought he MAY be. I also had a sheriff go to his Mothers house to try to locate his whereabouts. We finally did make contact, and he permitted the adoption.

Thank you for replying. Do you know approximately what that cost for your lawyer to go through such a process?
I don't remember...it was 17 years ago. But i do know it was cheaper due to the father never being in the picture. Just keep calling until you find a cheap-but-good one.
