Has anyone heard about the K12 program?
It is considered a charter school, but it takes place in your home. It is an internet based program. They have the child take a placement test to see what level they are at in each of the areas. They provide (exept for paper and ink for the printer...yes, they even provide a computer, printer, and internet hook-up) all of the marerials you will need to implement this program. If you are interested or want more information, look up www.K12.com
This program sounds really good to me. I really like it becuse it provides an individualized program for each child. There is also access to real live certified teachers that you can count on for help and support.
I also like this program becuase it is good for people like me, that don't know the first thing about how to homeschool. They give you the lesson outlines and worksheet...if you can read, you can do this program
I feel that the majority of children that are available for adoption are delayed as far as school goes. Having the opportunity to learn in a non-threatening, loving environment can make a world of differnce to any child, but especially one that isn't doing so well in the school system.
Anyway, read about it and tell me what you think. I'd be very interested in hearing your opinions about this.
P.S. I haven't started using this program yet...I'm waiting to adopt, but I plan on using it as soon as a child is placed with us:)

but I digress....
One of the main reasons I homeschool is that I don't want the government to have control over what my children learn.
I also don't want my kids to hate learning. And the way to make them hate it is to force them to complete work that they are not interested in, is too easy, is too difficult etc.
It really doesn't take a lot of effort to homeschool children if you try and view the world through their eyes. Inspire, not require. Think of new and innovative ways to attract them to learning rather than requiring them to complete a certain amount of learning at a certain time. Structure school time but not the content. Set aside a block of hours for learning but don't direct the study. At first they will do absolutely NOTHING ;-) But as long as they don't have TV or computer games during school time they will eventually get bored and start searching for something to do! That's when a carefully placed book, project, or learning activity will jump out at them and the learning will begin! Learning is all about Environment.
My favorite quote is a sylligism(no idea if that's spelled correctly LOL)
"Great education occurs when students study.
Students study when they choose to.
Students choose to study when they are inspired."
Not trying to start a debate of course. But that is my opinion about K-12 and all curriculum programs ;-)
