Has any birthmoms or adoptees ever requested hospital records from the hospital where baby/you was born before childadoptee was of age to legally search. If so, what were your results and what advice would you give. I just want to have any information that I can from this time in my life. I cannot remember a lot of it and also would like to see if there is any useful information for a little farther down the road when my daughter is old enough. Thanks to anyone that might can help.

I called the hospital where I had my daughter and asked them for her birth records. They made me show proof of who I was..( DL) did the trick and they copied everything and handed it all over. I wanted something to proove I was indeed her birthmother if she ever questioned it..
I did this when my daughter was about to turn 16....
I ( being an adoptee)on the other hand have tried to get my records from the hospital I was born at ...they told me they didnt have them any longer...they keep them for 25 yrs and then do whatever with them....and do I believe them????...heck NO...
HTH....

Hi Renee- Thank you for responding. What all type of records did they copy and send you? Did it have anything on them about the adoption listed? I had requested my medical records from the birth of my daughter a few years ago from the doctor that delivered her, but I did not really receive any helpful information. They even had ADOPTION wrote in big letters on the bottom of some of the records. They did not even fill in the spots on the baby's weight and length. Isn't that ridiculous. But I did not request any records from the hospital directly. I also just wondered how hospitals in Georgia have reacted for any requests for records, what state was your hospital in? I have heard that after so many years, that the hospital sends all records to an Archives building that keeps them. You ever heard of that? Well, let me know what you think, and if anyone else has requested hospital records, would like to hear your experiences and results. Thanks again Renee, Hugs!!!!!!
Hi Deb,
I am in Ohio , so not sure how other states work with this. But I got a copy of her birth record (with her feet and my thumb prints). I also got her apgar scores and the paper from the delivery room nurse. Stateing how she looked and if any life support assistance was needed. That sort of stuff.
my situation maybe different wih the records since I parented for almost 2 yrs before relinquishing. So that is why there was no mention of the adoption on the records. And even when I called to request them I didn't mention Adoption.
I am sure there is probably some place the hospitals here send all their old files also..but I didnt pursue my records since I had all the information from my Bfamily when I was reunited.
I live in Massachusetts, but was born and adopted from Atlanta, Georgia in 1984. When I was 13, my adoptive parents requested any info they could get, and they were sent my birthmother's records from the hospital. The only thing that was changed was that her name and identifying info was blacked out. Other than that, it was a copy of the original forms.

Thanks for posting... I was wondering... do you know how your adoptive parents went about requesting those records and what they asked for when doing so? Also, if you do not mind me asking, did your adoptive parents request the birth records when you were 13 due to a need that they had or was it for your own benefit of wanting to know where you came from? Also, do you remember what hospital it was? The hospital that my daughter was born in told me about a month ago over the phone when I was checking on some things that my records no longer existed. It has been 15 years since her birth. I would not think that they had any right to destroy those records. I hope that they have been sent to an Archive building or something. Have you searched for your birthfamily? I am also adopted as well, and searched for my birthfamily when I was 22. I finally hired a PI through the state of GA to locate her. Anyways, thank you for posting and hope to hear back from you again. Take care. Hugs!
I have also tried to get the records of my hospital stay and Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta says they detroyed all my records. Can anyone help me find my daughter? I have been searching for two years now with no luck. I have registered with the Ga Reunion Registry and have several websites that I'm posted on including this one. Any information would be recieved with the upmost gratitude and blessings!!! This is the info once more:

I was reading your post and I wanted to let you know that the information that you were given (about the hospital no longer having your records) is actually true! The actual hospital will no longer have your records on site - after a certain number of years (and for some hospitals it's only 7 to 10 years) they hand over all "old" records to a company which holds them for the hospital. This has become the "new" way of handling files for about 10 years now - It stinks, I know, because I haven't been able to get my records from the hospital I was born at either - and I WORKED there! ha! Maybe one day we'll find a way...

As a birthmother, I requested a copy of my hospital records, hoping they might help me in my search for my bdaughter. I was told that after 10 years, they were sent to a medical "storage facility". Of course no one at the hospital (even the higher-ups) seemed to know where this facility was located.
