My wife and I are new to the adoption process. A couple months ago, we signed up with a company in Indiana. We were moving right along with all the paperwork, until the homestudy. I thought I had done all my research about the company, but I guess it wasn't enough. We were not very pleased with how our homestudy was conducted. We both felt it was handled very poorly. After bringing our concerns to the company, we decided to move on. We have signed up with a new company in Indianapolis and are very pleased with the progress. My question is, should we pay for the first homestudy? We were told that we could use this homestudy for any adoption agency, and that was not true. We all know how expensive adoption is, and to pay for two homestudies is a lot of money.
Honestly, I think you'd be better off consulting a lawyer in IN to see what you can do. Sounds like the agency may have provided misleading info, but if it was only verbal then you have the burden of proof. If the agency wanted to take you to court over it, the written contract and other paperwork would likely be the deciding evidence.
Anyway, chatroom psuedolawyers aren't going to help you make a good decision here. Better get the real stuff.
I'm sorry you got a bad agency to start with. Hope the next is much better.
