We are waiting on the pink slip, birthmother signed off for the final time last week and the new birth certificate was issued in our name Friday. So I am trying to get prepared for the pick up trip. I have lots of questions for all of you who have "Been there and done that" regarding the pick up trip.
As of December our daughter was almost 18 lbs and 27 1/2 inches long. SO, what size diapers do I need to take? I am wondering what size clothes to take also? Maybe some 9 mo and some 12 mo???? Also I have been told to take "warm weather" clothes for baby, what did you all take for the baby to wear while in Guatemala????? When we return it will be pretty chilly/cold here so of course I am planning on taking a couple of winter outfits to put on her just before we land.
Re; the embassy appt. How dressed up should I be? DH will wear dockers and polo, but as for me I have no clue! I have been told that I need to wear a skirt/dress. While at the hotel (Clarion) would it be OK for me to wear slacks. I have been told the the women in Guatemala generally wear skirts not pants? I dont want to offend anyone in my attire, but I am very conservative all the time anyway. Also what kind of shoes would you suggest? Sandles (obviously not heels) or some type of casuel flats? etc.
Thanks for your help! I am now getting nervous/really excited about the pick up trip!
The diapers I would buy down there.
For you, what would you wear to a business meeting that isn't denim?
I can feel your excitement!

BeBe,
Speaking from experience, don't stress about what to wear. Women that I met and seen in Guatemala dressed just let us. Comfortable and casual. I wore jeans and jogging suits most of the time. As for the embassy, I wore dockers and a sweater. There were people there in jeans and t-shirts. Most of what I heard was not true. As for the hotel, COMFORT!!! Any shoes are fine. I took some casual shoes to wear with slacks and then my tennis shoes. No one questioned or even gave me a second look.
Just relax, enjoy your little one and have fun! I stressed for no reason. Congratulations by the way.
Bebe,
I would buy diapers in Guatemala. Shortly after we arrived at our hotel and while we were waiting for them to bring Elia to us, we went shopping for diapers, wipes, and baby food. I would suggest size 3 diapers. Elia is 20 pounds and 28.5 inches long and she wears size 3. (She is getting close to size 4 though so 3 should be good for you.) She is wearing size 12 months. She has been home for 2 months now and when we picked her up in November she was wearing 9 months. In fact, some 9 months still fit her, and some of her PJ's are 6-9, although she is about to outgrow those. I think mostly 9 and a couple of 12 months should be good. As far as clothes for you, I would wear something comfortable and casual. I wore capris and sandals while we were there in Nov. I am not sure what the weather is like there now, but I was comfortable in that. It did get very cool at night, and I sure it is cooler now. I would not wear dresses or skirts. I would not wear sweats or jeans to the embassy, but pants are fine. Good luck and have fun picking up your baby!! Jenny
Congrats! You must be so excited!
She should fit just fine in sz 3 diapers and 12mo clothes. I would get a couple of 6-9 mo outfits just in case. I know others have suggested buying diapers once you get there, but I know for us that buying diapers was the last thing on our mind, so I would suggest bringing diapers.
As for your clothes, dress casual...dress slacks are fine with flat shoes or a small heal. You could be waiting a while at the embassy so dress comfy and take some toys to keep your little one entertained.
Have a great trip!
Bebe,
We just returned from Guatemala nearly two weeks ago. I just wore comfortable sweats in my hotel room. If I ventured out I wore tan casual jean pants and a comfortable shirt. At the embassy I wore a long, comfortable skirt and a pull over shirt, with very comfortable shoes. My dh wore casual pants and a nice shirt. Our daughter just wore little pants and a top.
Try to enjoy this one in a lifetime adventure and take lots of photos. Being that I am a "new" Mom and not very comfortable with international travel, I was nervous about the trip. Now I realize that thousands of people do this every day. The people at our hotel were wonderful (Radisson). Federal Travel (FederalTravel.com) did our flight arrangements and I can't say enough good things about them. The US Embassy was great to us, and Delta Airlines was too.
Godspeed. It's YOUR time!

Bebe,
1. Size 3 diapers is fine in Huggies. There is a PHARMACIA across the street from the Clarion. They have diapers. You can bring wipes, diaper oinment, baby powder/shampoo/wash/, q-tips, teething toys, bring small dish detergent and use the boiled cofee maker water to sanitize. Bring small plastic bowls and some utensils to start off your trip. I recently visited and brought some crackers. Size 12 months clothes should be fine for 18pds. depends on the brand. Layers for the trip home. Huggies makes a night diaper only for night.. these diapers were a life saver on the plane. Always give food or drink to the baby when going up and down in the Airplane (to help alleviate the altitude adjustment).
2. You may want to bring a small compact stroller.. this depends on your flight (s) and what HUB or if you are flying direct. I remember Houston-was a long walk from gate to immigration.. I'm glad I brought the stroller.
3. Clothing-business casual.. you don't need to wear a skirt. In the hotel room.. comfortable clothes.
Have a GREAT trip-
:)
A stroller is a life saver especially if you have any long lay overs or a long way to walk like in Houston. Even Dallas was a trek from our plane to customs. You can gate check them see your ticket agent and they will have it at the door of the plane by the time you get off. We had a long layover and it saved us from 4 hours of fighting a wiggle worm. He wanted to crawl everywhere and we found a wide open area for him to crawl but he headed to the main flow of people every time.
The one thing we were told by our agency was not to wear shorts out in public or look like a tourist with a fancy camera around your neck. We bought a couple of dispoable cameras for when we were out walking around and left the digital camera in the room.
We brought diapers along, with the weight we picked the right size. And the pack into the side pockets of suitcases really easy.
Have a great Trip
