Non-Identifying Information
There is no fee for non-identifying information, but a copy of an adoption order is $15.00. Usually prepared within four weeks, but can be longer.
Passive Registry
The Passive Registry enables an individual to express a willingness to exchange information with your birth parent/adoptee and is free of charge. If there is a match, the adoptee or adoptive parent must pay a $35 registration fee and a $90 contact by mutual request fee.
Passive Register for Birth Relatives: If you are a birth parent or other family member, you may request that your name be placed in an adoptee's file in the event that an adoptee requests a search or contact in the future. Other birth family members, such as siblings or grandparents, may request contact, but contact is normally cleared first with the birth mother. When an adoptee requests contact and the request is mutual, the registry will move as quickly as possible to facilitate a meeting, averaging within two months of the date of registration.
As of Sept. 1/96 , for adoptions finalized before Sept.1/96 with the written consent of the adopted adult and birth parent, a copy of the adopted adult's original birth registration may be released. This registration contains information that identifies both parties concerned.
Active Search
Active searches, also known as search and contact, can now be done on behalf of Birth Parents as well as Adult Adoptees. The cost for an active search is $265. An additional fee of $175 is charged for search and contact with second and subsequent family members. As of this writing, the current waiting period for an active search is two years or longer. It should be noted that there are reduced rates for STUDENTS in full time attendance of school, individuals on Social Assistance, Employment Insurance (including those collecting benefits while on maternity leave) and Senior Citizens.
Counselling
Prior to a reunion, the registry prefers to have personal contact with the adoptee and the birth parent. This contact is frequently by telephone. Referrals for counselling are sometimes made to an agency. Informational counselling is available upon request.
