This is a spin off from my prior thread where some talk about raising independent children came up.
1- Exactly what do you see as an independent child? And how do you as a parent work toward teaching your child to be independent?
2-What would lead you to believe you were successful in teaching your child to be independent?
3-And for those of us who have adopted an older child--how do you balance teaching independance with the attachment concerns?
Hi,
I think the theme of independence is an interesting one. I suppose it depends on the age of the child and their background regarding how independent they are. It also depends on their level of skill and their personalities.
I'm thinking of when it is OK to leave a child on their own for short periods of time. This would depend upon whether the child likes the idea or has fears. It would also depend upon whether the child would be with siblings and/or friends or have neighbors close by. 'They' say that children can begin to be alone at the age of 11.
It's important to teach our children to become independent but to do this in stages and when kids gain self-confidence.
Would love to hear from you ... what are your thoughts?
