My wife and I are looking into adoptinga a baby. We looked into international adoption but have decided on a domestic adoption. I have been told that the cost for a domestic adoption (white healthy babies) is somewhere in the area of $35-40,000. I have a friend that paid the mothers' living expenses for the last 4 mths. of the pregnancy on top of the $27,000 agency fee. Is that common? What are the approximate costs? I heard that adoptions in Kansas go rather smoothly. Any info on this and do you know of any excellent agencies?
moonzing,
We will finalize our domestic adoption in Illinois in May and our total cost is less than $10,000. That is our lawyer fees and agency fees. We did agree to help with the bmoms hospital charges. We told the agency that we would only pay what he insurence would not. We are only liable for about $200.00. I hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!!

WOW! That's a lot for a domestic parental placement situation. Most are under $10,000 including all fees and related costs. Ours was $14,000, including advertising, travel & lodging (3 trips to Texas, one was 19 days long), legal, homestudy & post-placement supervision. Our son is German, English and Dutch, he was a perfectly healthy term (41 weeks, 2 days) baby.
We're not the only family that did this. We belong to a local support group of which we're the 'big spenders' - everyone else was under $10K regardless of their child's ethnic heritage.
The rule of thumb is - the more professionals and paraprofessionals involved, the more fees. The reason why these $20K + situations are advertised is because they're so high that there are few who can and are willing to afford them.
IMHO those cost estimates are way off.

Yes, We have seen those kinds of fees as well, and with my husband being military it's just NOT feasible. However, we are planning on going through an adoption agency in New Mexico with a total fee of 14,000.00. It's called Adoption Assistance Agency based out of albuquerque. I hope this can help you.
Good Luck!

my wife and I just did a domestic adoption and what a wonderful experance. The cost is high and yes paying the birth mothers expenses is common but should be included in the agency fee. We used an agency called American adoptions and they were sooooooooo great. The total cost was about 35,000 but keep in mind there are some hidden costs. Your travel must be flexable and that is costly at the time of turnover and depending on the state you may have a waiting period from time of turn over up to 10 days so you need to account for housing, meals rental care ect.. Post placements are about 250 each and can be any where frokm 1 to 4. If you count on 45,000 all in you should be ok. Don't let the number scare you you would be surprised how quickly you can come up with it when you have to. Good luck
Hello,
One thing we were told by the local hospital was to get a home study done and give it to the patient advocate or the maternity ward supervisor and if someone comes in and decides to give up their child they have a name to give social services of someone who has a homestudy done...
Not sure how well or if that works but an adoption like that would cost less. We adopted a teenager as we decided that a baby would weigh us down in our mid 30's and we made a great decision! Food dor thought!

We brought home our son on Jan 6. With our agency the second adoption is at a lower rate. That is also true with our lawyer fees. Our total fees for this adoption are right at 5000 dollars. GOOD LUCK!!
