Has anyone adopted in MN through interstate adoption? If so, did you work with an agency or with the County services? How was your homestudy handled and what sort of travel was incurred?
We are interested in adopting a sibling group and many of these groups are in TX or AZ. Race is not a factor, but health is. We have heard how hard it is, but there has got to be a way....
anyone??
Thanks!

Hi Nicole,
We have located an agency within MN that handles interstate adoption from the Waiting Child lists. They are SUMMIT adoptions. They also do homestudies. While adopting an infant across state lines seems to be no biggee, as soonas the child gets on that "waiting children list" there is hell to pay from that point on! :(
I have been doing some reading on www.adoptuskids.com and once a homestudy is complete, you can register on their site. This allows you to contact the social worker of a child you may be interested in. With any luck, between them and your agency, the adoption process my work.
I wish you the best of luck. Keep me posted if your interested.
Hi we are in the process of adopting through interstate. Our kids came from Fl. I found them on the internet photolisting of fl kids. Interstate is long and drawn out and you have to stay on top of it. Our family was chosen for this sibling group in Feb 2003 and we finally got them home in aug 2003. Now that they are here that is the biggy but we still don't have a finalization date...well we did and them mn decided we need a new homestudy because they have gone to a different format. If it was up to fl we would have finalized in March. Who knows now when it will happen. All I know is that I have my boys here with us. The rest is all in interstate time. Jude

Sounds great to me!! We are actually starting the process over and working directly with an agency Lutheran Social Services (they might have one in your area)? In MN this is a completely free service for MN kids, we are still looking interstate and they do charge a fee for that but I found that no other state would talk directly to me so this way is going to be much smoother!
I guess this goes mainly to 304hoke1 and jhard828, how would you start the interstate adoption process? Where I live (PR) they seem to only have Dept of Families and don't have any adoption agencies. Is it possible to start in another state, or would the agency itself have to be located where we live?
Hey BrightEyes_PR! Your from Puerto Rico right? I was trying to do a google search but can not come up with anything. I did find an attorney that deals in adoption and has worked with PR. He lives in Saint Louis - Rodolfo Rivera of Anderson Schmidt & Rivera in St Louis, it might be worth giving him a call to see what he knows or if he knows anyone that can help you locally... Sorry that is all I could come up with.
