Please help.
My stepson is eleven years old right now and I have been his only father since I married my wife in 1998 when he was only six years old. My wife and Aaron are from Mexico and I they both have permanent resident status in the USA.
I would now like to do my own adoption process in California (San Diego) for my stepson (sorry it is hard for me to refer to him as stepson). My wife was rapped in 1992 in Mexico where she worked as an RN by a doctor. My stepson's birth certificate only carries my wife's name as the mother. There is no father on the birth certificate.
Can someone please indicate the steps, costs and approximate time it would take to adopt my stepson. He is anxious to have my name as we have two additional children now that carry my last name I do not want him to have bad feelings due to my procrastination. I was able to complete the immigration process for both my wife and my stepson by myself and would like to do the same for this issue.
Thank you,
Elmagito
Depending on where you are in San Diego, contact the Juvenile court and speak to someone in the adoptions department. There is a Juvenile court located in the Vista area and one in the Kerney Mesa area. They can start you in the right direction.
You may also want to contact the Department of Health and Human Services and tell them you want to start a stepparent adoption. They can help answer a lot of your questions as well. They do the recommendation report for the court for the termination of rights of the absent parent and for the adoption.
Good Luck!!
