Normally I wouldn't simply repost something from another area, but since this specifically relates to searching in Massachusetts, I want to make sure the info reaches the folks on this particular board. Here it is:
Many of the "how to" posts in here reference a series of steps to take. First, request non-ID info. Second, petition the courts. Third, post on forums and search sites. Maybe not in that order, but those are generally speaking the suggested free steps to get started.
In many of the posts I've seen it referenced that the petition step in particular is a longshot. I wonder if that dissuades people from doing it. I hope not.
Because it just worked for me, here in Massachusetts.
I typed up a one page petition to the court, with a specific medical reason for requesting the information. My thought was that I need to convince a judge that the benefit of giving me the information outweighed the potential loss of privacy for the parties involved in the adoption. I kept it brief and methodical, avoiding any emotional aspect. I tried my best to portray myself as a (reasonably) sane person whose family would be better off if we had this information.
Clearly it worked. I got the original birth cert with my original full name, the name of ALL parties involved (first, middle and last) and the signed forms from CC back at the time.
Can you say "yowza"? I had honestly forgotten I even sent in the form 2 months ago, and all of a sudden I get this package in my mailbox. I'm floored, to say the least. From no information at all to everything in one afternoon.
So, aside from professing my current state of being completely overwhelmed, let this be a reminder: If it's a free step, DO IT!! Take the time to write the petition and go for it. You never know when you'll hit gold!!

I had petitioned the Essex County Probate Court about two years ago only to be denied after almost 6 months of waiting for a response. I was crushed at the unfairness of my situation and I was *very* reluctant to try again for fear of further rejection.
About a month and a half ago, I got my nerve back and re-worded my petition and sent it off again. I got the response today that i had been waiting for today and I am thrilled!
I got the full names of both my birthparents and lots of other info I never even knew about!! Including some info about my adoptive parents... i really need to have a little chat with those people.
If you are searching, please do not ever give up hope.

Hi - can someone tell me how I would go about petitioning the courts to get records released? Do I look for what county my birth certificate was filled out with? I am not sure how to find what court system and the addresses? I am having some medical concerns and now I have a 21 month old that is experiencing several medical concerns. Would love any info. Thank you in advance
Belle, the best way to get the official process for your state (where you were legally adopted), go to the state boards, and one of the firth 2 or 3 pinned threads will be "searching Resources for (your state)". There's usually a phone number in there for the state social services agency that can get you started on the process. Just tell them you want to petition to have your records opened and they will likely give you the number of the court of jurisdiction.
Typically, you need to petition the court of jurisdiction where your adoptive parents lived at the time of your adoption. They are the ones who filed all of the paperwork to adopt you, so it all resides there.
Hope that helps. If you have any problems finding the numbers, let me know.

Ok. So here's the good news for me. I went to Suffolk County Courthouse a week and a half ago, and today, I was viewing my adoption records!!! AMazing!!!! I thought this would take months or even years!! I sent out my first contact letter today(next day guaranteed, of course) and sent a couple of pictures, one of me and one of my kids and girlfriend. Keeping my fingers crossed here!!! Thanks to all who have posted such helpful info, especially you, oh great search guru...lol. I'll keep you all posted. Good luck and God Bless.

the jurisdiction for where you'll petition the court for your records is where your adoptive parents lived at the time of adoption.
