I was so excited when I learned that I could breastfeed an adopted baby. My husband and I are in the first stages of adoption.....We have no idea how long our wait is...we haven't even had the homestudy completed! BUT...I did want to get some information on the herbs that can be taken to help with the breastfeeding. My understanding is that the herbs help with the milk supply. I have two biological children and breastfed both of them, and would definitly want to breastfeed a child that we adopt. If you could help me with the herbs, that would be great! How soon should I start the herbs.....
Thank you so much for any help you can pass along!

Hi there! I am currently inducing lactation and have been pumping/taking herbs since May. We had a possible match in June that fell through. We have now been matched with a bmom due in March. I will continue to pump/take domperidone untill then. I quit taking the herbs because they were expensive. Depending on my milk supply in February I will start taking them again. I am determined to make as much milk as I can. I am pumping 3-4 times a day and getting around 12 oz. a day. I am very pleased with my progress. The herbs to take are blessed thistle, fenugreek, goats rue, and dandelion help with milk supply. I also love the tea, mother's milk tea. That can get expensive too. The domoperidone is farely inexpensive. I order 1800 tablets for $200.00. I take 8 tablets a day. I have not noticed any decrease in my supply without the herbs, as a matter of fact, I still make progress every couple of days. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the info about the cost of domperidone. That was one of my big questions. We're waiting to adopt our second and I've been pumping for a couple of weeks now. So far, I can't find a doctor who will prescribe domperidone for me since it is not FDA approved. Did anyone else have this trouble? Also, what is your source for domperidone 1800 tablets for $200. I haven't done much looking around, but that seems like a great price. I'm really excited about this, but there sure are some frustrating obstacles. Maven-I'm encouraged by hearing that you're getting 12 oz. I'm not producing yet, but should be soon. Do you remember how long it took to produce milk from the time you started pumping/taking meds? Thanks!
You don't need a script for the domperidone. You can order it on line. Good luck!

Sorry, I forgot to answer your second question. I started out with a drop or two of milk a day, I think thanks to all the fertility drugs I had been taking. I made fast progress. I started taking the doperidone the day I started pumping though. I think it was a week before I started producing about a half oz a day. You'll see though, and everyone is different. I was pumping four to five times a day as well. Good luck!

Thanks so much for your help. Your previous post came through without the website for ordering domperidone. Apparently it was screened and removed by the message board. I would still love to know where you buy it. Can you list the name of the site in a future post without typing it in as a URL? Or feel free to send me a personal message. Thanks again. You have been so helpful!!

Hi
From what I have read..domperidone is FDA approved..but not readily available in this country because Reglan is already here! Reglan is still prescribed to lactating women...even though we all know that it has horrendous side effects like severe depression..which domperidone does not have!
If you go to Lenores website..you can find ordering info there for domperidone....www.asklenore.info..
Wow..12 ounces just with domperidone is great..esp with only pumping 3-4x a day...when the babies due date/adoption date is closer...you need to increase the pumping to 6-8x a day and once at night..the night pumpings really help with supply...since prolactin peaks during the night...
