Fl Icpc

We just adopted in June 2004. The bmom signed her paperwork on a Friday, but the lawyers didn't leave the hosp until almost 5 pm, so the ICPC packet didn't get mailed until the Monday. Good news is, it was back and we were free to go home by mid-day that Friday. Overall not a bad turn around. DS was born on the 23rd. FL was in the middle of budgeting and had just pink slipped all but one person in the ICPC dept to be effective July 1 (turned out to be part of a budget protest stunt), so the ICPC dept was in a bit of a tumult at the time. Had us scared stiff we'd get held up, so we were greatly relieved. Think how fast is also partially dependant on your lawyer and how experienced they are with out of state adoptions, and then also how fast your home state acts in processes their part of the equation. I'm so glad I found this thread... We are from Texas and are talking with a bmom that lives in Florida... this is all very new to me.... do we need to have a lawyer in Florida or will our one in Texas be able to represent us?? TIA~

FL likes to keep the entire adoption process in their state including finalization. We could have appealed to finalize in our state, but VA takes 6 mos or more to finalize, where FL is usually 90-120 days. It made more sense to keep it in FL. Because of that we only had one lawyer - in FL. FL will allow you to finalize via phone so you don't even have to make a trip back. A notary will have to be present to attest to who you are during the finalization. In fact, we just got our finalization date - October 19th!:) :cool: :D I would recommend making sure you do use a lawyer that is experience with out of state adoption, because alot more is involved from a legal standpoint. It makes all the difference in the world! Our match was very late in the preg (2-1/2 weeks before ds was born) and the lawyer's office did a great job getting it all together so last minute. They also work next to an agency and share a sw, so ds' bmom was able to get counseling afterward. A big relief to us, since I so wanted her to have it available. we were in FL for 10 days total, 5 waiting for the ICPC. we finalized in 4 mo via tele as we are in cali. hope this helps :)
