Hi,
I am at my last stage of doing my MAPP training for foster care. I know I want to do adoption if the child that happens to place with me comes up to that point (TPR) and we are a match for one another. I'm from MA and I know that I have to do a whole different homestudy and some other things when it comes to adopting a child, which I plan to do. I just want to know can I adopt a child if I am legally seperated or do I have to be divorce from my spouse?
thanx
Thats an interesting question҅Ill attempt to answer it based on my perception of the laws in many states.
You can adopt if you are single or married҅
I can only assume that if you are legally separated, you are still considered marriedso any adoption would have to be completed with you and your legal spouse listed.
Since you are legally separated, why not just complete the divorce before you move forward with the adoption?
Another question, are they requiring your husband to complete the classes as well, since you are legally married? You might want to ask them about this in MAPP TrainingŅgenerally, if you are married, both partners must attend the trainingI would sure hate for this to hold you up!

thanks for the response..
During my journal for foster care, the seperation is not a problem because he does not live in my household. We've been seperated for 2yrs now.
As for the finalization for a divorce is he is not willing to give me one, which is the most easiest way. I can't just have him serve because I don't know where he is residing now nor works. Hiring an investigator is costly.
So he's not required to take the MAPP training unless he lived with me. DSS is only concern of those in your household.
So, that's why I was curious if adoption had the same requirements as foster care regarding those living in your household and seperation.
