Sorry for the second post-
I also wondered, has anyone started a homestudy before choosing an agency? It was suggested to us by a friend, but want to make sure we don't mess up any steps. Should we not complete the home study until the agency is selected? Also, is it more or less expensive to do it this way??
thanks again,
Debbie
Our homestudy was part of our agency fees. I wouldn't have occured to me to do it separately. Did your friend give you any idea of their reasoning? Maybe it's different in state agency situations, our adoption was through a private adoption agency. For me, I wanted to deal with as few people in the process as possible. Our homestudy was completed in a timely manner, in part because the agency has an incentive if someone hasn't paid all of their fees upfront, the agency can only get the remainder of the fees once there is a matched.

We did our HS before selecting an agency or attorney or facilitator. One reason for us was cash flow. We weren't ready to make a committment to any service provider, but we knew we wanted to adopt so why not at least get the HS completed?
Most people don't realize you can do this 'al a carte' as long as it is done by an lisenced social worker or organization.
We did our HS though an agency and will likely use thier full services, but we are exploring other options in the interim before we commit, as it is a lot of money no matter which route you take and we want to make sure we feel totally comfortable before we sign a contract.
All the best,
