Hello, my husband and I may be relocating to the US next year for his work, we are worried that we won't be able to adopt while we are there. Does anyone know if a Canadian can adopt a US child? We have thought about international but thought it might be easier to adopt domestically. I have emailed an adoption agency in the states that is associated with the church we are members of, but I am interested to hear if anyone else has any experience with this.
Thank you.

I read an article in People magazine a few months ago about people from Germany and Canada adopting from the US (particularly black and mixed newborns). It can be done although they may be going through specific agencies for this. My husband is a Canadian citizen with a US greencard and in the USAF. I'm looking to find out if our potential son to be born in AZ is going to automatically gain dual citizenship or if we are in for another round of fun paperwork. Good luck.

I child born or adopted to a Canadian citizen (even abroad) will be automatically granted Canadian citizenship (but it does require paperwork and $250.00 fee :) )
Canadians can adopt American children, and several hundred are adopted from the USA every year and immigrate to Canada. I dont know the logistics of doing the adoption in country as a Canadian citzen, but I am sure it can be done.

Jensboys,
Is this a new law? I am a Canadian living in the US. I adopted two girls in the US (not allowed to do international adoption while living here). The rule then (last adoption 2002) was that I would have to immigrate the girls to Canada and sponsor them in order for them to gain citizenship. I know there was a bill proposed (Bill C18 I believe) which would grant them citizenship in the same way as if they had been born to me here but did not think this had passed....
