My husband and I are considering foster parenting and would like to know the real stories, the pros and cons, etc from people who have done it themselves. We have no bio children, and little experience with kids. We figure this would give us positive exposure to what it's like to have a child in our own home with the ultimate intent of adopting. We want to know how the system works, especially in New York City where we reside, the financial and emotional ups and downs and so forth. Thanks for your feedback. :)

Good for you for considering fostering!!! I have to believe that there is a child out there whose heart is calling for your home. Fostering was such an awesome experience for us, even though our situation is different from yours. We did not go into it with intentions of adopting, but were open to it (and we did last week). I am a bit sad that chapter of our lives has closed, but with 4 children now we feel we have as much on our plate as we can handle.
My advice to you would be to proceed with getting the info from your county and have someone come out to begin the process to get licensed. It will become apparent pretty quick if fostering is for you. We had several couples in our class that quit before completing because they realized they couldn't do it. The rest of us seemed to get more excited as the weeks went on. In my opinion your not really commited to anything until you accept your first placement. Best of luck on your journey :)
