I just got an email from my friend who's husband is in Guatemala picking up their baby boy. He was supposed to leave this morning to come home, but the airport is closed to planes coming or going due to the airline controllers being on strike. She said she had no idea how long he would be stuck there. She said he's not a happy camper. She's got to wait even longer now to finally see and hold her baby.
Anyone have any news on this? Has this happened before? How long does it usually last when this happens? I had never heard of this happening there before. I'm praying that the strike is off today, so none of you who are visiting have your plans messed up. I sure am sorry to hear about this!
If anyone knows anything about this, please post it!
Judy
Had not heard this news. I believe there was a massive strike back in June 2004 that shut down many governmental services and the airports, but it lasted less than a day before it was resolved. I hope this one will be over by the time we get an update!

wow. that's scary. it would be bad to get to guatemala and have to turn around and come back. we'll see if those who were traveling today get there. also saw in one of the guatemalan newspapers from the guatadopt site that the protesting in solola has turned violent. there is a pic in the paper with tanks and explosions. very scary. it is not close to GC i don't think, but you never know what could happen. i'm kind of glad we aren't traveling now on friday.

Anyone know anything about this or where we can find more info about it? I've been looking and can't find any info on it and so has my friend who's husband is stranded in G.C. right now....

I hope someone knows. Does anyone know where to go to get more info.? We leave early Friday morning (hopefully we can still go ) and am wondering the same thing. There are quite a few of us travelling this week and any info. would be helpful. Do you think the airlines would have info.? Thanks.

I don't know anything about the airport being closed or not but maybe if you could call an airport hub like DWF etc and see if the flights going out or coming in from Guat are still going and coming. They might have an idea as to if the airport is closed as it would affect their schedules.

I just called American, and they said that air traffic controllers have staged a 24-hour strike. All flights today are cancelled, but they are expected to operate tomorrow. The agent added, not surprisingly, that all flights for tomorrow to and from GC are completely full.
did anyone try the guatemala america embassy they should have info? what about your local airport if you have your ticket already to fly out to guatemala?

We are stuck in Houston due to the strike. Our lawyer in GC thought it might last all week but Continental also says they think we can finish our flight tomorrow. Please let that be true, I don't know if I can take having to fly back home without Sophia.
We have searched and searched the internet and can find no news on the strike, please, if anyone hears more...post it!!!!

who should be holding her baby right now and instead is sitting in Houston.
Only good thing, we had a really nice lunch paid for by the airline, if you fly through Houston try Papadeaux's, its a cajun seafood place on E concourse. They had a really good buffet, best airport food I have ever had and I fly alot!

Just called American. They said that it all looks fine for our flight out tomorrow. We shall see...

I don't know, Jennandsteve, I might rather be in Houston. The food sounds better. I have not had a bite since McD's in DC at dawn. THIS SUCKS!!!
It is true, about the air traffic controller strike, I got the same story from American Airlines at the ticket desk. Actually got booked for tomorrow (same bat time, same bat channel)....but have no clue if it will depart or not.. All on my flight were NOT as lucky, some did not get booked till Friday, they are stuck here for two days instead of one. One is enough, thank you!
WHATs WORSE.....
I am now told my file is "under investigation" by DHS...Homeland Security. This is who has the 48 hrs to turn around a case and get the Embassy to create a pink slip. Well, 48 hrs came and went, still nothing. I am sure you all have seen my frantic posts. I'm just as frantic, because I don't see what will happen, or WHY this is occurring. She is my DAUGHTER NOW!! I am legally her parent, how can DHS now demand MORE from this process!!??? What more can they want??
I feel so ticked with my own govt...it's not the Guatemalan govt that seems to delay so much of this process. Even though we (my agency and me) got my Congresswoman involved so far, they cannot come here and demand that someone let me have my baby and bring her home.
My birthday wish has turned into a nightmare.
Does anyone know anything about DHS "investigations" ....and this is at the PINK SLIP level!?????
Thanks for any input, ya'll pray for me, I am losing it!
and have no clue how long I will stay in GC, or if Addison will be able to come home with me on this trip that seems to have taken a huge turn for the worse.

The International Delta Rep ( Atlanta) called the ATC center in Atlanta and they said that the strike was supposed to be for today only and all flights for tomorrow are still scheduled. ( Hope nothing changes.) I am headed to the airport bright & early with faith!!!
Good luck to travelers that are stuck!! You have my prayers.
Just received confirmation from our agency that there currently is a strike (airport closed) and it is expected to last for 24 hours. Definitely confirm flights before heading to the airports. I hope for everyone's sake (including all the people attending the adoption conference next week) that this strike is resolved quickly and everything is back to normal.
BTW, YES....Papadeaux is an awesome restaurant!! :)

Don't worry guys. These things happen periodically in Guatemala. The strikers make their point for a day or two and then things start working again.
