We tried to use Turbo Tax for 2003 to claim our adoption credit, but we never could get it to work. So, we decided to go with TaxAct. It took the info, but when we filed, the IRS reduced the amount of our return saying that we could not take the Child Tax Credit *and* the adoption credit. Tax Act figured our refund for tax year 2003 as $4102. Our ACTUAL refund was $1783.
Line 34 says $2319. Obviously, that number was not correct, since the IRS reduced our refund. I have some figures written on a sheet of paper, but I wrote them while I was on the phone with the IRS. Here is what is written:
$3400-Child Tax Credit
-$2319-Qualified Adoption Assistance
-------
$1081 (can't get both)
$1081 Adoption Credit
+$702 actual refund
--------
$1783 refund amount
Does this mean we only got $1081 of the QAE credit? Can I carry over the rest? He is deemed special needs by the state, so we qualify for the full $10K. I am thinking I need to refile for year 2003 because this is going to really be diffucult

What's line 34? I'm not sure where $2319-Qualified Adoption Assistance is coming from. Is this money that was given to you from your employer?
You ARE able to claim both the child tax credit AND the adoption tax credit. They are two different things. I don't know why the IRS is saying you can't. There were problems last year with the turbotax not accepting the adoption tax credit. I think someone said an update would be given out later in the year. It didn't affect me, so I didn't pay attention. It does affect me this year. I don't know why they didn't get the bugs out.

Well I just read the whole thing:

Who the hell makes up this stuff? I mean what in the world were they smoking when they decided how to make these policies. It takes an estimated ONE hour to fill out this form. Yeah, right, more like FOUR hours, bc who the hell can understand this stuff?
I have no clue now what to tell you. They make it sound like this $10K+ is a given if you make less than $110K a year, but it's not over and beyond. I guess we lose the $4K for the child tax credit for our four minor kids. How friggin confusing can the IRS make this? No wonder TurboTax didn't include it. They probably couldn't figure it out!
We are in this boat too. We were told last year that we can carry over the remaining amount that we couldn't use of the credit from last year and apply it toward this year. Last year we were able to take both tax credits but didn't pay enough out in taxes to get the whole $10,160 back. I will look into this too. I will try to remember to post back in a couple of days (when I'm expected to have my dh's W-2). It seems like it should be easier than it is, but thats the government for you.
ok, after pulling my hair out, I decided to hand fill out a 1040A to see if I could see where TaxAct went awry. On Line 2 of form 8812 (Additional Child Tax Credit) line 2 was not filled in. This skewed all of our figures by $1080. That $1080 plus what we paid in taxes equals our refund amount. Since we got it figured out, it was easy to do out credit carryover worksheet.
In short, DON'T USE TAX ACT lol.
