On Tuesday April 26, 2005 Minister Sandra Pupatello proudly brought Bill 183, the Adoption Disclosure Act to second reading in the Ontario Legislature. Minister Pupatello read several letters of support for the bill and spoke at length about why it is important for adopted adults and birth parents to gain access to identifying information about each other. Marilyn Churley also spoke about her long struggle over the years to bring open adoption records to Ontario. Many other MPPs from the three parties also spoke in support of the bill. MPP Cam Jackson, Conservative, said he too would support the Bill although he recommends a disclosure veto. The proceedings of the session are now available to read on Hansard at style=" color:rgb(0,0,255);"www.ontla.on.ca/hansard/house_debates/38_parl/Session1/L135A.htm#P507_99322. It's very lengthy, but great reading for all of us who have struggled for so long for this day. Second reading of the bill hasn't yet come to a vote because many people still remain to speak about the bill. In general it seems that the Liberals and the NDP are completely on board with the bill and many Conservatives too. Next it will go to the Standing Committee hearings that will likely take place in mid to late May. It is our hope that, barring anything unforeseen, Bill 183 will be heard for the third and final time by mid June.~*Angelwings*~
