My husband and I are thinking of adopting a teen (13-16) through the PA foster care system. We're open to a GLBT teen. I have a 17 year old son now in College and a background working with at-risk youth, including GLBT. Right now its just my husband and I & 3 dogs at home. We've got the room, but its a big step. All family, friends, church think its terrific and would support us. Is this a crazy idea?
No you are not crazy.. we foster older kids (have had 2 girls 14, 15 when they came to us.. 15 and 16 when they left and now have a 12 y/o boy.. we were going to adopt the 2nd girl that came to us and lots thought we were nuts.. but we love her and she fit so well into our family.. unfortunaltely things did not work out (due to some issue she had when we adopted our son).. but she is still in our lives and we love her very much..
Just be prepared for lots of adjustment time and watch carefully to see what is reallly "just being a teen" and what might be attachement issues or them being scared..
Good luck and know that you are wonderful for doing this,,

As someone who spent ten years in foster care before aging out, no you are not crazy. Kids need families and especially kids who might not be accepted by other families due to sexual orientation. God bless you and your husband for being so open minded!
Go for it!
My husband and I are in PA and were considering several teens before we got call to take our sibling set.
I read a TON of profiles for kids on the 'waiting' list for PA and though I didn't see any that were specificly GLBT there are MANY with desperate needs for permanent homes, and someone who can advocate for and work with them on their issues (though admitidly there are a lot with sexual abuse history)
Best of luck!
Diane
BTW - I am in South East PA - if I can be of any assistance with 'local' stuff feel free to Private Message me
I too would like to add my awe and happiness with the decision your family has made ... this is not an easy journey nor adventure with the baggage than comes with these kids who have experienced either trauma or sadness ... disappointment in life and the world!
Looking forward to more posts from your end. This board is a wealth of knowledge and great for venting when needed and we hope we can be both to you when and if needed.
Keep us posted! :)
