A friend of mine just found out the birth parents of her adoptive daughter want her to adopt the baby they are expecting. She and her husband and daughter are on top of the world. She needs help on finding the adoption laws for the state of Michigan. She and her husband and daughter live in Illinois. Some questions she asked directly are how long after the birth of the baby will they be able to bring him home? Will they have to go to court there? I need help pointing her in the right direction as far as laws and what she can expect. Thanks in advance for any help. :)
Hopefully, you have found the answers to your questions already. If not, here is what I know based on communication with our agency:
You do have to go to court in Michigan. The adoptive family gets temporary custody of the child at the hospital, either as guardians or foster parents. The birthparents rights can take a month or so to be terminated. I believe your friends would have to remain in Michigan until this happens.
To find out for sure how the laws work, I would suggest contacting a Michigan adoption attorney.
Hope this helps!
